For a shooter who values refinement and build quality over price and round count, the CC9 is the class of the field.

Savage Stance XR 9mm

Savage Arms had not built a pistol in roughly a century before the Stance arrived in 2021. The single-stack original was well-made and reliable but hampered by a spongy trigger and modest capacity. The Stance XR fixes both: 13+1 in a 0.96-inch frame, a genuinely improved trigger, and a tool-free QRO optic system that swaps red dots without fighting stripped set screws. It undercuts most double-stack micro-compacts on price and matches them on the features that matter. The brand recognition is not there yet. The gun is. For a shooter willing to look past the name, the Stance XR is one of the most underrated carry pistols on the market.

Shadow Systems MR920 9mm

The Shadow Systems MR920 is what you build when you have a Glock 19 and $400 in aftermarket receipts. It ships with a plate-free multi-footprint optic cut, co-witnessing tritium sights, a flat-face trigger that gauges under 5.5 pounds, aggressive grip texture, and a match-grade 416R stainless barrel. It uses Glock 19 magazines and fits Glock 19 holsters. Owner logs document clean function past 5,000 rounds after break-in. The break-in is the condition: plan 200 to 500 rounds before trusting this gun. A minority of guns have shipped with out-of-spec slides that Shadow Systems replaces under warranty. That happens. A Glock 19 Gen 5 does not make you do that. Whether the feature set justifies the premium and the patience is the question this review answers.

The Shadow Systems CR920P puts a factory compensator, multi-footprint optic cut, tritium sights, and an upgraded trigger into a Glock 43X-sized subcompact. Independent chrono data shows 1,026 fps with Federal HST 124gr from the 3.75-inch comped barrel, roughly equal to an uncompensated Glock 43X, with measurably flatter recoil and 1.0 to 1.33 inch groups at 15 yards. The catch: a documented 200-300 round break-in, a voluntary barrel replacement program on early units, and proprietary magazines that cost more and fit nothing else. At $880+ it costs what a Glock 19 MOS plus $300 in upgrades would, but ships ready from the box. Whether that premium buys convenience or risk depends on your tolerance for break-in periods on a gun you plan to trust your life to.

Civilian access comes through police surplus dealers at $0.66 to $0.75 per round when it is in stock. The +P variant (RA45TP) is the best-performing .45 load from compact 3.3-inch barrels in the data we compiled. When you can find it, buy it. When you cannot, Federal HST is the equivalent.

Federal HST 230gr .45 ACP

Federal HST 230gr is the best .45 ACP defensive load from a full-size barrel by every measure the data supports. Independent gel testing shows 0.85 to 0.91 inch expansion through heavy clothing with 14 to 15.5 inches of penetration and near-100% weight retention. The six-petal pattern is consistent shot to shot. From a 3.3-inch compact barrel, the standard pressure version fails to expand through denim roughly half the time, dropping below the FBI 12-inch minimum. The +P variant recovers 80 fps and partially solves the short-barrel problem. Buy the standard pressure for full-size guns. Buy the +P for compacts. Buy both in 50-round LE boxes at $0.61 per round because the 20-round retail price is a tax on not knowing where to shop.
